FGN Guitars are made by Fuji Gen Gakki – a musical instrument manufacturer based in Matsumoto in Japan. It is named after the famous Mount Fuji. Gen means stringed instruments and Gakki means musical instrument - the name literally translates to "Fuji Stringed Musical Instruments".
Fuji Gen started production in 1960, making violins and classical guitars. In 1962 Fuji Gen started production of electric guitars and became one of the world’s major manufacturers of OEM guitars for famous American and Japanese guitar companies.
In the 1970s Fuji Gen started making guitars (OEM) for companies such as Hoshino Gakki (Ibanez), CSL (Antoria), Kanda Shokai (Greco guitars) and Yamaha. In 1977/1978 Fuji Gen went into a joint venture with Roland to produce guitar synthesizers.
In mid-1981 Fuji Gen became one of the first guitar makers in the world to obtain a CNC router for making guitar parts. This allowed for extremely accurate cutting, leading to some of the best quality control for guitar makers in the world.
That same year (1981) FGN also began to manufacture their own pickups. These pickups have been used in all of their own and most of the OEM product since that time. The distinctive “name-brand” sounds from those times were delivered by these excellent pick-ups.
By 1983 Fuji Gen were producing 14,000 guitars a month with 80% of the guitars being made for export markets and 20% being made for Japanese domestic markets. This ensured that Fuji Gen was the largest guitar maker in the world at that time.
Fuji Gen now has 3 factories, the Omachi factory in Nagano, the Hirooka factory (established around 1992) in Nagano and the Matsumoto head office factory in Nagano.
FGN is now the number one guitar brand in Japan.
Amongst the important innovations brought about by Fuji Gen are: the circular fretting system; special gluing techniques for laminate and plywoods; string through body bridge option; original satin finish necks.
All FGN-branded guitars are fully made in Japan utilising specially seasoned woods and all Japanese hardware. Gain guitars (by FGN) are made offshore but with the same extremely high quality control standards applied to all FGN guitars.
